Moving House in Salisbury? Here’s How Storage Makes It Easier

Moving house is rarely straightforward. Completion dates that don’t line up, chains that collapse at the last minute, and the reality that you can’t always fit the contents of a four-bed into your mate’s spare room. If you’re moving in or around Salisbury, having a secure place to store your belongings during the gap makes the whole process far less stressful.

The gap between houses is the problem

In an ideal world, you’d hand over the keys to your old place on a Friday morning and pick up the keys to the new one that afternoon. In reality, there’s usually a gap. Sometimes it’s a few days. Sometimes it’s weeks. Sometimes the sale completes but the purchase falls through entirely and you’re left with everything you own and nowhere to put it.

This is exactly the scenario storage is designed for. Instead of cramming everything into a relative’s garage or paying over the odds for temporary accommodation with your furniture in tow, you move your belongings into a storage unit for as long as you need. When the new place is ready, you collect them, or we can bring them to you.

How long do you need it for?

That’s the beauty of how we operate, you don’t need to know upfront. All storage at our Salisbury facility runs on flexible terms with no long-term contracts. There’s no minimum commitment beyond one week, and when you’re ready to leave, we just need seven days’ notice.

This matters because house moves are unpredictable. You might think you’ll need the unit for a month and end up needing it for a fortnight. Or the purchase might get delayed and you need it for three months. Either way, you’re not locked in.

Can you collect our belongings for us?

Yes. Our man-with-a-van service handles the transport. We’ll come to your door, load your belongings, and drive them to our Warminster Road facility. When you’re ready for them back, we’ll deliver them to your new address.

This is particularly useful if your removals company is only covering the day of the move itself, or if you’re doing the move in stages, clearing the loft one weekend, the garage the next, and the main rooms on moving day.

What about Salisbury-specific moving challenges?

If you’ve lived in Salisbury for any length of time, you’ll know the city centre can be tricky with larger vehicles. Narrow streets around the Cathedral Close, residential parking restrictions in areas like Harnham and Fisherton, and the one-way system can all make moving day more stressful than it needs to be.

Our facility is outside the city centre on Warminster Road in South Newton, off the A36. There’s free parking and plenty of room for vans and trailers, and no access restrictions. It’s about a 15-minute drive from the city centre, far enough to avoid the traffic, close enough to be convenient.

We also serve people moving to and from the villages around Salisbury, including Wilton, Amesbury, Durrington, Laverstock, and Old Sarum. If you’re relocating within southern Wiltshire, our Salisbury site is the most convenient option.

Packing tips for storing during a house move

A few things we’ve learned from helping hundreds of Salisbury families through house moves:

Start early: Don’t leave everything until moving day. Pack room by room over the weeks leading up to the move and bring boxes to storage as you go. It spreads the workload and means less chaos on the day itself.

Use proper boxes: Makeshift supermarket boxes are fine for light items, but for books, crockery, and anything heavy, you’re better to invest in proper removal boxes. They stack better, they’re stronger, and they protect your items.

Wrap furniture properly: Blankets and dust sheets are worth the small investment. A dining table that goes into storage without protection will come out scratched. Sofas should be covered to keep dust and moisture out.

Keep an essentials box separate: The kettle, the chargers, the kids’ school stuff, the things you need on day one. Don’t let that box end up at the bottom of a storage unit.

Take photos: Before you start packing, photograph each room. It makes reassembling at the other end much easier, especially for things like cable setups and shelf arrangements.

What does it cost?

It depends on the unit size and how long you need it. Our Salisbury self storage page has full details, and you can get an instant price online in about 30 seconds. We also offer a price-match guarantee, if you find comparable storage in Salisbury at a lower price, we’ll beat it. There are no hidden charges. The price you’re quoted is the price you pay.
